Rotary Signal Emitter by Sculpture

In September 2010, Sculpture, an audiovisual performance duo from London comprised by electronic music producer, Dan Hayhurst, and animator,Reuben Sutherland, presented us with a flattened zoetrope on the surface of a vinyl record by the name of Rotary Signal Emitter (Dekoder Release 046).

The Victorian zoetrope, invented in 1834, was a three-dimensional object that consisted of a spinning cylinder with vertical slits through which still images appeared to move.

Sculpture’s animation requires the use of a video camera to convey its magic, but as can be seen from their videos the effort is well worth it. Just the knowledge of the latent potential contained within the vinyl surface serves to enhance the experience of the music and the spinning disc, even to the naked eye, is a hypnotic spectacle.

Sculpture’s music, is a mixture of psychedelia, hauntology and turntablism, is a perfect match for their striking visuals. Other films by the duo can be viewed on Tapebox (they’re very much worth your time).

A Blue Note Classic! We’ve been spreading the news about Robert Glasper‘s new album for a quite a while now, simply because it’s the best album we’ve heard so far. Now it might not be be for everybody, but we believe the fusion of Jazz music with Soul and Hip Hop is incredible on “Black Radio”. With all these covers from Nirvana to David Bowie you’ll still be amazed how Glasper this album sounds. The experiment is of course Robert Glasper, Chris ‘Daddy’ Dave, Casey Benjamin and Derrick Hodge. Who knows in 20 years we’ll look back on this as another Blue Note classic. Finally “Black Radio” is available worldwide via and other digital music stores. It’s also being released on wax for the vinyl enthousiasts.

James Blake’s ““The Wilhelm Scream” diggs into an obscure tune from his father’s all-but-forgotten band, Blake confesses uncertainty (“I don’t know about my dreams”), then resignation (“might as well fall”), as the track— just a couple of synth gurgles, a few weird creaks and bangs— transforms itself slowly. It’s the sound of Blake’s uneasy mind eventually emptied onto tape. His voice is lovely running up and down the side of the track, but without the flourishes that billow into the room in its second half, “Wilhelm” is barely a husk of a song. As it runs, “Wilhelm” gradually reveals a much darker, more conflicted song than its first bars would suggest: a pop song from a bygone era, deconstructed, wiped clean, then reconfigured into something strange and new. Perched between the experimentation Blake made a reputation on and his more recent explorations of odd-angled pop, “Wilhelm” deftly balances both. —Paul Thompson
